Warhammer Books

Although Warhammer is generally a hobby, the fluff that goes along with it is TOTALLY awesome. Many Warhammer Books describe epic tales that take place in the Warhammer universe. Like seriously, who wouldn't chaotic gods battling humanity, which is threatened by uber awesome aliens that devour all in its way, but is thwarted by an ancient civilization, which in turn is threatened by an old enemy back in the day, that recently awoke? Or an Ancient reptilian race that sacrificed much of themselves to save the world, threatened by the great armies of Chaos? Don't deny it, it’s incredibly awesome.

Well there are countless books out there published by the black Library, but the most widely recognized is the Horus Heresy series. These books tell the tale of when Horus, Warmaster and most trusted Primarch of the Emperor, gives over to the Chaos gods, and betrays the emperor. He was thwarted, but barely as the Emperor was mortally wounded and only can the Golden Thrown of Terra keep him alive.

Some other Warhammer books are standalone, such as Rebel Winter and the like. These contain the same amount of awesomeness, but generally the ones that run in a series are the best to read. They keep going, so you never will say “I love that book! I wish they came out with a sequel!”

My favorite book that I have read thus far is Titanicus, by Dan Abnett. It is a book I would recommend to ANY Warhammer 40k fan. This is the story of an enemy Titan Legion assaulting an Imperial Forge World, with titanic battles between titans, to a secret uncovered which can threaten the Imperium itself. A must read.

My other favourite books that I would recommend to any 40k fan are:
- Mechanicm
- Horus Rising
- Fulgrim
- Flight of Eisenstein
- Rebel Winter
- Space Wolf Omnibus
- Ultramarine Omnibus

You can find many more books at the official publisher of Warhammer novels and books here, at the Black Library's website. In addition to novels, Warhammer players generally buy Codices (Warhammer 40k) or Army Books (Warhammer Fantasy) to provide them with the required rules and point costs (the way we keep two armies balanced when they fight one another) However while the book is mainly there to provide you with the ruling for your specific race, there is also a whole section of fluff and the history of that army in it. It makes for a very interesting read, as you are learning the history of the race you are playing with, and adds character to the field of battle.

If you are just curious to learn more about the fluff, but have no intention to actually play (and thus buy army books or codices, internet is not a bad place to read. You can find essentially everything related with the History, or heroes and villains, stories, history of the races and anything else at sites like Lexicanum. They are great sources of fluff, I can literally spend a whole day looking at all of the fluff on the site.
