Warhammer Fantasy

Warhammer Fantasy: The Game of Fantasy Battles, is a tabletop wargame created by Games Workshop and the origin of this game's setting. First edition was published in 1983, so it is a moderately old. (Older than Warcraft for that matter. :P)

Warhammer is played with regiments of fantasy miniatures. It uses well known races such as Humans, Elves, Dwarfs, Orcs and Goblins, Vampires, as well as more unknown races, such as Lizardmen, an entire reptilian race.

Each race has its own unique strengths and weaknesses, much; Wood Elves, for example, have the most powerful archers in the game but have poor overall defence and Bretonnia have the strongest cavalry but weak peasants.

The gameplay involves lots of dice rolling to determine many things, such as rolling to hit, rolling to wound, etc. It is also highly strategic, so it requires more then mindlessly throwing units into battle.

It also has a “Rock, Paper, Scissor” style gameplay, for example many things that are good at shooting suck at combat, so you may counter the shooters with combat units. There is no set circle, such as Magic> Shooting> Combat> Magic… Etc. Some units may be good at multiple things, or just one.

Main Races:

  • High Elves

  • Dark Elves

  • Lizardmen

  • Vampire Counts

  • Dwarfs

  • Empire
  • Bretonnia
  • Wood Elves
  • Chaos
  • Ogres
  • Orks and Goblins
  • Tomb Kings
  • Skaven

  • Each have their own tactics, specialties, etc.

In the end, it all comes down to what is your personal preference!
