Warhammer Imperial Guard

Warhammer Imperial Guard is the army that appeals Modern War fans with their World War 2 looks, and primitive technology compared to other races. They are a horde army with lots of shooting, lot’s of tanks, and a few good close combat units.

Fluff wise, Warhammer 40k Imperial Guard armies are the largest and most diverse military organization in the galaxy. There are billions of men from millions of worlds!

Warhammer Imperial Guard constantly fights against alien – xenos - threats such as Eldar, Tau, Tyranids, Orks, and even the traitor legions of Chaos. While the rest of the Imperium is all beefed up with power armor, genetic enhancement, etc, guardsmen are mere soldiers with a flack jacket and a las-gun.

Because of that, it is relatively easy for a guardsman to be promoted...if he survives the onslaught. Unlikely to happen, don’t you think?

I always wanted to start a Warhammer Imperial Guard army. This army had a really cool WW2 tech, such as a crude artillery and lot’s of tanks. The only thing that’s stopping me is my preference to close combat, and this army isn’t exactly good at close combat.

In fact, they try to cower in cover while mowing you down! This is usually effective, but with the new rules, there are objectives that do matter more than simply killing everything!

For that, as you see, you have to move and hold objectives! This can pose a challenge: because this means moving closer to your opponent, also means heading into combat.Yaiks! Not ideal, unless you have a close combat unit to rely on…

Over all...

...bunkering up in buildings or cover can be effective if you are playing annihilate missions. Using cover and taking advantage of a 4+ cover save can be very annoying when playing a shooty heavy army!

Using the cover to slow your opponents close combat army can also be a nuisance... Keep in mind: you might want to arrange your army in a way that denies your opponent a cover save, such as not putting a combat heavy squad in front of a shooty heavy squad. This allows your opponent to take a 4+ cover save against your shots. Hey, when I play against guardsmen, I don’t mind!
