Here Is a Little Bit of History:
The game originated from “Rouge Trader”, a game which is very different from the current 5th edition. “Rouge Trader” was more of a role playing game then what it is now!
Rouge Trader brought the basic elements to Warhammer 40000, such as armies, plot, and the idea of dice rolling, etc.
Be warned that the game needs to use a lot - and I mean A LOT! of terrain or scenery if you are to play properly. Without terrain, Warhammer 40000 is just a mere firing lane with no strategy involved...
I will show you as many custom terrain pieces that I can find that you can do yourself. I learned that through my personal experience. Let me tell you that it is not fun when you play like this!
Warhammer Tactics:
Also, Warhammer 40K requires much tactics, with many back-up plans. A common thing players say is “hope for the best but prepare for the worst”… Sometimes, your dice rolling is unlucky. Sometimes, your opponent made a move you did not anticipate. Sometimes, it’s just not your day! Bottom line is: you always should come up with multiple tactics.
Be aware though, that each army utilizes totally different tactics, ranging from simple steamrolling to complex use of fast things to out-maneuver your opponent.
Below you will find a brief list of different armies, with the basic ideas of what tactics you could use.
Keep in mind that your army list might take advantage of totally different things listed. As I already mentioned before, you can’t follow always only one tactic. Believe me, I tried and lost almost all of the games! Not good;)
Main Armies:
Imperial Guard: Camp in buildings, and use your tanks to blow your opponent away in dust, and finally do the famous “Rapid fire rush”Tyranids: Always rushing forward while taking advantage of terrain, and sending faster units to tie up heavy hitters in combatEldar: Totally out-maneuver your opponent and quickly decimate his forces. Dark Eldar is similar to EldarNecrons: Camp in buildings and cover, use warriors to destroy anything nearby. NEVER throw this units mindlessly at your opponents! Necrons are tough, but can be killed and phase outSpace marines: Varies, usually pretty straight forward rush, while hugging coverChaos Space marines: Varies, usually pretty straight forward rush, while hugging cover
